Game Changer (Bomb Squad 3) by Melissa Cutler ARC Review

Title: Game Changer
Author: Melissa Cutler
Series: Bomb Squad #3
Release Date: May 19, 2015
Publisher: InterMix (Penguin Group)

The author of Undefeated and Risky Business has another sexy hero for you to meet…

Welcome to Destiny Falls, New York, home of Bomb Squad—an ice hockey team full of rugged military heroes. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity has the team captain packing his bags for greener pastures, but saying good-bye to the woman who’d captured his heart is easier said than done…

After being wounded in combat, Brandon Theroux lives every day like it’s his last. He never could have imagined that the sleek mechanics of his prosthetic leg would open so many doors, including minor celebrity status as a fitness model and a well-earned reputation as a rakish playboy. The only door it hasn’t opened is the one to Harper Johnson’s bedroom.

Harper has too much self-respect to join the ranks of Brandon’s “carpe diem” conquests, but when she needs someone to keep the peace in the tavern she owns, Brandon offers his help—as long as she agrees to a very tempting trade. It isn’t long before the two realize that a deal struck between friends who can’t keep their hands off each other has the potential to be a whole lot hotter than either of them is prepared to handle…

Rating: 5 Stars - EXCELLENT

Simply put, Melissa Cutler blew my mind away with Game Changer!
(non-spoiler review)

As a fan of the Bomb Squad series from the beginning, I was very eager to get to Harper and Brandon’s story. All along we were teased with a little insight into how things are with these two. They can’t resist a friendly bet. Brandon Theroux, the hockey team captain/personal trainer living the playboy lifestyle has had it bad for bar owner Harper Johnson. Despite their undeniable chemistry, Harper has rejected Brandon…for five years. Now, Brandon has been given an amazing opportunity, but he has to leave Destiny Falls to pursue it. Oh, how I adore Harper! At 39, she’s an older heroine with a young heart and must deal with issues that require true friendship. Is it too late for either of them? How about one more bet between two friendly adversaries? Sure, why not, but it’s a huge one, and it definitely can turn into a game changer!

Hands down, Game Changer is my favorite from Melissa Cutler to date! First, I thought I had an idea of what their story would be like prior to reading this book. I was completely wrong. Ms. Cutler gave Harper and Brandon a story that went down an extraordinary road, one so heart-tugging, unexpected and refreshing for me! I LOVE stories like these, the ones that are life-changing and make you want to live your best life.

Recommendations: This can be read as a standalone. For fans of the Bomb Squad series, Game Changer is a must read! If you haven’t read the books yet, but plan to at some point, then at least read book 1, Risky Business, first.

If you like your characters strong-willed and inspirational, then you NEED to read Game Changer. If you’re a fan of slow-building friendships and second-chance at life stories, then you NEED to read Game Changer. You don’t have to love sports romances to appreciate this book. The message is universal and anyone can relate. I don’t want to give away the plot, but I will say that it’s tension-filled from beginning to end, slightly unique, absolutely engaging, and several parts will make you grab tissues. Ms. Cutler will keep you wondering if things will ever be, but I promise you that you won’t be disappointed. Game Changer is a little different from her other stories, and I love that this one stands out. I can tell that, as a writer, Ms. Cutler had to go deep to write a special story for Harper and Brandon, and I think she wonderfully pulled that off with this book. You know that feeling when you reach the end of the book and just want keep living in their world? Yeah, I had that feeling at the end. Game Changer definitely holds a place on my favorites shelf.

She didn’t miss the note of intimacy in his comment. And while his admission and the underlying innuendo should have her running from the house, she found herself intrigued. What in the world was wrong with her? Her imaginings from last night were what was wrong with her. She’d sketched a picture of this man in her mind that was too perfect and without flaws. Everyone had flaws.
She decided right then and there that she couldn’t trust herself in his presence. Her imagination had run wild with this man’s character, and she couldn’t help but paint him as some sort of hero, not only for rescuing her but also for giving her the things she desperately needed right now—a safe place, a job . . . a chance.
With self-preservation finally at the forefront of her thoughts, she managed to take an uneven step away from him. The misstep shot a heavy dose of pain up her leg, and it felt like her stomach was in her throat with the sudden correction in her balance. But Mr. Riley grasped her arm firmly. Instead of toppling back, she was crushed along the length of his body.
With her hands wrapped around his strong forearms, she let him steady her long enough that her head stopped spinning. His thumbs brushed back and forth over the inside of her wrist, letting her focus on the intimacy of his touch instead of the pain radiating from her ankle.
His nearness did strange things to her, things that made her want to step closer instead of away from him, to be touched everywhere as familiarly as he stroked her wrist. She shook her head and dropped her arms to her sides. She needed to get a better grasp on her emotions, her desires.

Jennifer’s Favorite Baseball Memory

I knew I was irrevocably in love with baseball when, on the night of Game 6 of the 1986 World Series, I found myself walking alone through the streets of Manhattan, oblivious to everything except my Walkman. (Yes, we had Walkmans back then.) That game became famous as one of the most bizarre and dramatic in history – but of course I didn’t know that as I strolled from midtown to the East Village.

For the first time in my life, I was on my own in a strange city. A girl from Texas, I began rooting for the New York Mets as a way to feel part of this huge, overwhelming place I now lived. I learned to ride the subway out to Shea Stadium so I could see the games. I’d huddle with my boyfriend under a big blue Mets umbrella during rain delays. I listened to the call-in shows with all their fascinating Bronx and New Jersey accents. I watched, attended, or listened to every single game that year.

Then came Game 6 of the World Series, Mets versus the Boston Red Sox, with the Mets on the brink of elimination. The game started while I was at work, and someone had the radio on so we could all listen. I had a viewing party waiting for me after work, but I didn’t want to miss a single second of the game. If I took the subway, I’d lose the radio signal.

So I walked, even though it was over fifty blocks to my party. I barely noticed the streets I crossed or the cars darting past. All my attention was on the little earphones bringing me the play-by-play. I don’t remember the words, but I do remember the announcer’s resignation when the Mets were down 5-3 in the 10th inning, on their last at-bat, down to their LAST STRIKE. It was over, clearly. Some players were already changing, making their flight reservations to go home. And then … Gary Carter singled. I actually let out a scream as I walked down 1rd Avenue.

No one minded. Hey, it’s New York.

Then the pinch-hitter, Kevin Mitchell, singled. 5-4. In my excitement, I nearly stepped in front of a cab. But then Ray Knight went to 0-2, and it all seemed to be over. Again, the Mets were down to their last strike. I prepared myself for grief.

But no – Knight singled! Mitchell scored. Tie game. Tie game! The Red Sox changed pitchers. Mookie Wilson came up to bat. I turned up the volume so I could hear over the pounding of my heart. He too went down to his last strike before fouling off pitch after pitch.

Torture. Back on the streets, I’d reached the apartment where the viewing party was. I ran up the stairs. The door was open, and inside everyone was crouched next to the TV, yelling at Mookie, moaning, begging. Come on, Mookie.

Finally, I was actually seeing the game instead of hearing it. I wormed my way close to the set, just in time to see the infamous little grounder from Mookie that Red Sox fans hate to remember (sorry, guys.) The ball skipped through first baseman Bill Buckner’s legs like a mischievous little imp. Mookie darted for first base, Ray Knight bounded to home plate, holding his helmet so it wouldn’t fly off, and just like that, the Mets were resurrected from the dead. I’ll never forget the screams, the tears, the unbelievable release from the tension of that game.

And I’ll never forget walking the streets of Manhattan while I listened to it. After that game, I felt at one with my adopted city, and forever in love with baseball, which can rip your heart out and put you on top of the world in one swing of the bat.

So that’s my favorite sports memory. What’s yours?
~ Jennifer Bernard

What an absolutely exciting baseball memory, Jennifer! I've seen this particular World Series moment played many times on TV throughout the years. It was, indeed, incredible for baseball fans! I felt like I was right there with you cheering as you were telling your story.
Thank you so much for sharing this memory with all of us!

I guess my favorite sports memory would be the first time my husband and I saw the Lakers play at the Staples Center years ago. We got to see Kobe, Shaq, Dyan Cannon, and the back of Jack Nicholson's head. ~Grace

5 Pitcher Perfect Stars!!!

The bases are loaded, and I think All of Me is a home-run hit! Jennifer Bernard’s first book in her new Love Between the Bases series proved to be everything I wanted and more in a sports romance. If you’re into baseball romance, small-town romance, and likable characters who persevere through whatever obstacles life throws at them, then consider reading All of Me.

Baseball pitcher Caleb Hart is currently straddling the lines between the major and minor leagues. Right now he’s the new guy on the Kilby Catfish minor league team. If he can just improve his game a little more his career can finally take off in the right direction. He meets and works closely with Sadie Merritt on a PR project. For Caleb and Sadie, the sparks definitely fly, and the chemistry irresistibly flows between them.

“I want you, Sadie. You don’t know how bad. And when you talk to me like that, all fired up and passionate, I can’t keep my hands off you.”

I adored both Caleb and Sadie! Life has not been easy for either of them. Learning about their backgrounds twisted my heart so much. Caleb has major issues going on with a certain family member, and Sadie has had to endure the cruel wrath of an ex-boyfriend. Really, the ex is the worst and a purely despicable person. This is a small town read, so there are people who are quick to judge and secrets that don’t stay so hidden.

Ms. Bernard had me completely riveted with All of Me from beginning to end. There was great character growth with Caleb and Sadie both individually and together as a couple. Most of the secondary characters were equally as fun to get to know. I’d like to see a few of them get their own stories. Overall, I loved the direction Ms. Bernard took this story. This was my first read from this author, and I’ll gladly check out her other books while I wait for the next book in this series.

Jennifer Bernard is the USA Today bestselling author of the Bachelor Firemen of San Gabriel series. She is a graduate of Harvard and a former news promo producer. The child of academics, she confounded her family by preferring romance novels to … well, any other books. She left big city life for true love in Alaska, where she now lives with her husband and stepdaughters. She’s no stranger to book success, as she also writes erotic novellas under a naughty secret name not to be mentioned at family gatherings.

Rating: 4 Stars - LOVED

Can’t Resist a Cowboy is one of those feel-good stories featuring a cowboy and a very sweet heroine. Levi Haywood came home from Afghanistan to work on his family’s ranch, Paint River Ranch. Carrie Lynn is back home in Greenbrook, Montana temporarily to visit her father.

Since their family ranches neighbor each other, Levi and Carrie grew up together. I loved that aspect of this story. Not only do they share a childhood history together, but they were also sweethearts. When Carrie turned 18, her father sent her to live with family in the city where she could receive better care for her health condition. At the same time, Levi went into the military. It’s been a few years, but seeing each other again brings back so many memories and unresolved feelings.

“Everything he’d done, and everything he’d do now, was for her benefit. Because, God, he probably still cared about her more than he should.”

Right from the beginning Elizabeth Otto shows both Levi and Carrie working through their personal struggles, as well as, their struggle to reconnect. It’s not so easy for either of them. Both are dealing with things physically and carry emotional pain with how things ended with them in the past. Levi and Carrie go through a lot of hardship, but they are also shown as two people who understand and lean on each other for support when it counts the most.

I haven’t read the previous books, but Levi’s brothers are in this one, and now I’m quite curious about them. With plenty of touching scenes and a slow build-up to a second-chance romance, Can’t Resist a Cowboy is a delightful read!

About the Author:
Elizabeth writes steamy contemporary and paranormal romance by day, and works as an Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate by night. The night shift provides never-ending fodder for plots, characters and story lines! When not creating characters or saving lives, she wrangles three demonic children and tends to her heirloom garden in the beautiful Midwest.

Blog Tour ~ Vibrizzio by Nicki Elson Guest Post

Welcome to My Book Snack's stop for the Vibrizzio by Nicki Elson blog tour! Today we have a guest post and tour-wide giveaway!

Traveling with Nicki Elson

Lyssa and Hayden go on lots of business trips together in VIBRIZZIO, so Grace asked me to tell you about my most memorable travel experience. I’ve been to all of the cities in the story, also on business like Hayden and Lyss, but none of those experiences are as memorable as the time I was stranded at a small train station in Parma, Italy.

After 24 hours of nothing but trouble with planes, trains, and automobiles, my sister and I missed yet another connection at the Parma station. Nobody there spoke English. We don’t speak Italian. Nor did we prove very adept at reading Italian train schedules. You see the problem - how were we ever going to get to La Spezia and from there to Vernazza on the Ligurian Sea to finally start enjoying our trip?

Italian phrasebook to the rescue! My sister and I searched through the book for the words we needed to ask the ticket man when the next train to La Spezia would leave and from which track. We waited in a long line to get to the front and read from our carefully transcribed Italian sentence. Then he answered us. You see the problem again, don’t you? We don’t speak Italian so we had no idea what he’d said!

Thinking quick, my sister wrote down what his words sounded like and we stepped out of line to again consult the phrasebook. Putting his sentence together, we found we had more questions, so we looked up the words, wrote them down, waited in line, and wrote quickly as he answered back. I don’t remember how many times we rinsed and repeated, but I wish I’d taken a picture of that darling ticket man who laughed every time we came to his window.

With his patient help, we eventually get our info and went on to have an amazing trip. There was plenty of good wine, spectacular views, and friendly locals, but isn’t it funny how it’s the mishaps that often end up being the most memorable moments? The other stories I considered telling you were the Tale of the Busted Knees, The Literal Hole in the Wall, and The Time We Got Locked in a B&B.  ~Nicki Elson

That really sounds like a wonderful trip to Italy, Nicki. Thanks for stopping by and sharing this memory with all of us. ~Grace

Writing wasn't something Nicki set out to do; it just sort of happened when she realized writing reports was by far her favorite part of her investment consulting position. She traded stock allocation and diversification for story arcs and dialogue and now weaves her creative writing time in with the other activities of her busy life with her family in the Chicago suburbs.

Nicki writes with two goals in mind: #1 to keep the characters realistic, even when their circumstances are anything but, and #2 to make the reader feel. Watch for her new title Vibrizzio, coming in 2015 from Swoon Romance. Her published works include Three Daves, a light-hearted romantic romp through a 1980s college campus, Divine Temptation, a romantic novel of angelic proportions, and Hans & Greta: a Twisted Fairy Tale Novella. Her published short stories include “Sway” (available as a single), “I Don’t Do Valentine’s Day” (part of A Valentine Anthology), and “Impressionism 101” (included in the debut issue of Insatiable: The Magazine of Paranormal Desire
