Rating: 5 Stars - EXCELLENT

A wedding novella done the Hard Ink way!

Oh, the feels! I can’t even begin to describe all the lovely feels I got from reading Hard Ever After! First, the Hard Ink series is one of my favorite romantic suspense series. Reading each story in this series just pulls you into a wild ride with the team each and every single time. I loved the first book, Hard As It Gets! Hard As It Gets was the book when we were first introduced to Nick’s friends, and they would form a team and pursue a mission that would span the entire series. More importantly, I also adored Hard As It Gets because it was Nick and Becca’s story. All throughout the series we saw snippets of their love for one another grow. Reading Hard Ever After was such a special treat for me!

Laura Kaye maintains the steam and romance in this particular novella. The opening is just…wow! You’ll need to fan yourself right then and there. Both Nick and Becca start thinking about what they want in the future. Nick, especially, really wants more with Becca, so the wheels start turning in his handsome head, and it all begins there. This is a true wedding novella. Ms. Kaye takes you through all the beautiful moments and makes it so very special for this particular couple. Then there is threat and nail-biting suspense, and this wouldn’t be a Hard Ink novella without any of that going on throughout the plot. Let’s just say that the team works well under pressure and everything is done the Hard Ink way! Yeah! It was awesome seeing everyone work together again, and we get updates on all the characters, too!

If you’re jumping into the series now with this novella, then Laura Kaye does a lovely job getting you up to speed with all that went down in the previous books. Personally, I loved reading this particular series in order. This series is fast paced with an intriguing series arc that will have you immediately grabbing for the next book. If you’re already a Hard Ink fan or a Nick and Becca fan, then this one is a no brainer…Hard Ever After is a must read! Thank you, Laura Kaye, for giving us very special moments and memories with all our favorite characters from this series!

Dinner Scene

Sitting at the dinner table surrounded by their friends, Nick squeezed Becca’s thigh. She turned to him wearing a huge smile, a champagne glass in her hand. “Are you feeling frisky, Mr. Rixey?” she asked.

Nick leaned in close. “No, I’m fucking horny. I want to mess up your lipstick and tear off your panties and make my fingers and cock smell like you.” He leaned back again, his face carefully neutral.

Her eyes were wide—and full of heat. “Holy shit. How am I supposed to be apart from you the rest of the night after that?”

“Welcome to my world, Sunshine.” He threw back a gulp of whiskey.

“Come here. I want to taste that off your tongue,” she said.

“Jesus,” he gritted out, but it wasn’t like he was turning down a kiss. She leaned in, giving him a great view of her cleavage down the front of her sequined strapless dress, and grasped his face in her hand. Her lips were warm, soft, and tasted like champagne and the chocolate mousse cake they’d shared for dessert. Fucking delicious. Her tongue slipped around his, and she pressed herself closer.

“Someone pull those two apart,” one of the guys yelled.

Nick grinned even as they continued to kiss. He wasn’t voluntarily giving up Becca’s mouth, that was for goddamned sure.

“All right,” Kat said from the other side of Nick. “We better get the rest of the night underway before we lose the bride and groom.” Laughter all around as everyone got up from the table.

“Do you think they’d notice if we snuck away?” Becca asked, her face absolutely glowing.

Beckett grabbed Nick by the shoulders. “Get up, Rix. The tables are waiting for us.”

“Apparently,” Nick said. “You go have a good time, Sunshine. But you be ready for me later.” He arched a brow.

“Oh, I will,” Becca said, her tongue licking at her bottom lip.

Shit, he had it bad for her. And he fucking loved it. This woman was going to be his wife. How fantastically lucky was he? A man who just months ago would’ve said he didn’t believe in luck, unless it was of the bad kind.

Outside, they found two massive stretch Hummer limousines waiting for them. Beckett had arranged their transportation for the evening through one of the companies he had experience working with—the cars were bulletproof and the drivers were prior military and armed. Nick appreciated the hell out of the gesture.

As the men headed for one vehicle and the women for the other, Nick pulled Becca into his arms. “Have fun, Sunshine. I love you.”

“Love you, too, Nick.” This kiss was softer, sweeter. Which was good, since all their friends started giving them shit.

“Yeah, yeah,” Nick said, flipping the guys the finger.

“Before you go, I have something for you,” he murmured, then slipped a little wrapped box into Becca’s hand. “Wear this and think of me.”

“What is it?” she asked.

“I’m not telling,” he said.

Unleashing Mr. Darcy by Teri Wilson ~ short and sweet review

Title: Unleashing Mr. Darcy
Author: Teri Wilson
Release Date: December 31, 2013

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single woman teetering on the verge of thirty must be in want of a husband.

Not true for Manhattanite Elizabeth Scott. Instead of planning a walk down the aisle, she's crossing the pond with the only companion she needs; her darling dog, Bliss. Caring for a pack of show dogs in England seems the perfect distraction from the scandal that ruined her teaching career, and her reputation, in New York. What she doesn't count on is an unstoppable attraction to billionaire dog breeder Donovan Darcy. The London tycoon's a little bit arrogant, a whole lot sexy, and the chemistry between them is disarming. When passion is finally unleashed, might Elizabeth hope to take home more than a blue ribbon?

I read Unleashing Mr. Darcy back in April 2014. Here are my short and sweet thoughts that I wrote back then.
This book is now a Hallmark Channel Movie, too!

If you're a fan of modern-day twist Pride & Prejudice stories, then you need to check out Unleashing Mr. Darcy! Set in a lovely English setting with dog shows and cute puppies, Donovan Darcy becomes absolutely smitten with American Elizabeth Scott. The story is adorable, charming, and will make your tummy flutter with warm fuzzies! This is my first read from Teri Wilson, and it won't be my last.

Never Let You Go by Katy Regnery ~ Review

Title: Never Let You Go
Author: Katy Regnery
Series: A Modern Fairytale #2
Release Date: June 12, 2015

In this modern retelling of Hansel and Gretel, 13-year-old foster children, Holden and Griselda, escape from their abductor after three years of brutal captivity and try to cross the Shenandoah River on foot. Tragically, one of them makes it to safety but the other is left behind.

Ten years later, Griselda’s boyfriend drags her to a fight club grudge match where her world is turned upside down when she watches Holden step into the ring.

Though the connection between them is fierce, bitter regret, simmering rage and a cache of physical and emotional scars lie between them, just as dangerous as the whitewater of the Shenandoah.

Never Let You Go is a story of fear and hope, defeat and survival, and two people - once profoundly broken – who discover that love is the only thing that can make them whole again.

This is a standalone novel inspired by Hansel & Gretel. New Adult Contemporary Romance: Due to profanity, scenes of physical abuse and very strong sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18. (Note: children are not sexually abused in this book.)

“I jump, you jump.”

Never Let You Go is the first full-length novel I’ve read from Katy Regnery, and I’m quite impressed! This modern day retelling of Hansel and Gretel winds the reader through a roller-coaster of emotions starting with the feels of desperation and spans over 10 years as the story of Holden and Griselda unfold.

Holden and Griselda meet as foster children when they’re about ten years old. Their lives are forever entangled when they’re kidnapped at that age and held captive together for three harrowing years until one of them manages to escape. Left with empty hearts and not really knowing what happened to the other, Holden and Griselda surprisingly find each other ten years later. In many ways their reconnection marks the beginning of a brand new journey that leads both down a road of redemption and enduring love.

“I’m whole because I’m with you."

Hands down this story is dark, gut-wrenching, and tear-inducing. Their abductor is super crazy, and Ms. Regnery does not sugar coat many scenes. All the grit paints a clear picture of how close these two bond together as they struggle to survive an unfortunate situation, which is all the more heartbreaking when they’re separated. Holden and Griselda go through so much as individuals and as a couple. Many things get in their way, but these two fight like hell for each other! Katy Regnery throws in some twists and surprises, and you certainly get that “when it rains, it pours” feeling. I adored Holden and Griselda! I loved how Ms. Regnery made them both selfless and understanding the most. I highly recommend Never Let You Go if you’re looking for a dark standalone read with a couple who share a romance that is soul-mate deep.

My Book Snack's Short and Sweet Sunday Post (#11)

The Short and Sweet is my version of The Sunday Post.
The Sunday Post meme is created by Kim the Caffeinated Book Reviewer. Bought Borrowed & Bagged is hosted by TalkSupe. It's a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead.

The Sunday Post

Welcome to my first Short and Sweet post of the year! Sorry, it's been a while since I've done a weekend wrap-up type post. After the busy holidays, travel and illnesses, things are starting to get back to normal. I'm also hitting the textbooks now, so we'll see how much fun reading I'll get done while studying. Every once in a while someone will ask me if I still exercise, and the answer is YES! Exercise is such a huge part of my life, and I try to do something active at least 5-6 days a week. I love HIIT, yoga, hiking, and power walking long distances. I've been known to power through 6 miles in some outings, which is nice because it usually means that I get through a huge chunk of the audiobook I'm currently listening to.

I will recap the past few weeks.

My Love in the Light review is HERE.

Love in the Light - Teaser 1

“So Caden said you two met in an elevator,” the tattoo artist said to Makenna, amusement plain in his voice.

“We really did. We were trapped in it for over four hours,” Makenna said, smiling. It was a little weird to talk to someone she couldn’t look at, but she couldn’t move while he was working. “In my office building. I rode it just today.”

“That’s quite a way to meet someone,” Heath said with a chuckle. “How come nothing like that ever happens to me?”

“Maybe you don’t ride enough elevators,” Makenna said.

The tattoo machine pulled away from her skin. Heath laughed. “I guess I don’t,” he finally said, leaning back in.

The needles hit a sensitive spot along her spine that had Makenna grimacing. Originally, she’d been thinking of putting the piece on her shoulder, but when she’d decided on the bigger size, she thought it would look better in the center. Heath had warned her that the central placement meant inking over bone, which could hurt more, and it sure did.

Caden braced his elbows on his knees so he could lean closer. “Want to play twenty questions?” he asked.

She smiled, knowing he was trying to distract her and appreciating the heck out of the gesture. “Are there still questions left we haven’t asked each other?”

“Probably,” he said. “For example, I don’t think I’ve ever asked you your favorite sex position.”

“No laughing,” Heath said, as Makenna tried to hold back her humor. Heat filled her cheeks. “Also, TMI. However, I like TMI, so feel free to answer, Makenna.”

Since the needle was away from her skin, she did laugh that time. “Okay, so maybe there are questions we haven’t asked.” She winked at Caden as Heath got back to work. “And, to answer the question, the second part of the night on my floor.”

Caden’s gaze went molten. He flicked at the spider bite piercings with his tongue. And that had parts of her going molten, because she knew how freaking talented that tongue was.

“Yours?” she asked, arching an eyebrow.

Rating: 5 Stars ~ Excellent

A truly satisfying and worthy sequel!
Caden and Makenna forever!

Love in the Light is a sequel that I’ve been waiting a long time to read. I read Hearts in Darkness in April 2011, and I immediately fell in love with Caden Grayson and Makenna James. I couldn’t wait to finally get more on this beautiful couple and find out what happened after that fateful night. Fans wanted more, and boy, oh boy, did Laura Kaye deliver in giving us all a shining sequel to enjoy to our hearts content!

Love in the Light begins 2 months after Caden and Makenna got trapped in that darn elevator. They’ve been getting to know each other more and seem very happy together. Makenna takes Caden home with her during the holidays to meet her father and brothers, and things get a little overwhelming for Caden.

Poor Caden! In Hearts in Darkness we discovered that this sweet, tattooed, and scarred man lives with an anxiety disorder everyday. In Love in the Light, how he deals with anxiety and panic attacks is pushed to the limit. If you loved Caden before, then you will fall for him harder this time around. Both Caden and Makenna go through so much, but Caden has to finally make peace with the one thing holding him back from happiness forever after.

Once again Laura Kaye draws out deep emotions in her storytelling. If you or a loved one live with anxiety disorder, then you will understand the severity of Caden’s pain. Laura Kaye gets these feelings right in the story, and it all feels raw and real. Also, Caden is a paramedic, and she gives nod to emergency first responders in a positive light. I love that! The undeniable chemistry between Caden and Makenna continue to steam up the pages, too. There are plenty of heart-stopping scenes filled with warmth and tender love that you will need tissues on hand.

Love in the Light is a truly satisfying and worthy sequel! I will read this over and over again like I did with Hearts in Darkness. Thank you, Laura Kaye, for giving us MORE!

~*~ Review Repost ~*~

To celebrate the release of Love in the Light I wanted to repost my review of Hearts in Darkness that I wrote back in 2011 with my newer thoughts regarding the audiobook.

When I met Laura Kaye back in 2014, she signed my paperback copy of Hearts in Darkness with the original cover.

For being a short story, Laura Kaye does not disappoint in creating a sweet and sexy romance between two unlikely strangers thrown into a difficult situation. I loved learning about Makenna and Caden while they were getting to know one another. I loved how they didn't get a good look at one another before the lights went out, and they had to rely on their other senses. As other reviews said, the tension just keeps building and building! It only took me a few hours to finish the story, since I could not put it down. I just really needed to know what happened to these two people. If you're a fan of romance and want something quick to read, then get Hearts in Darkness!
Audiobook review
It was my first time listening to anything narrated by Erin Jones, and she made me smile at many of my favorite scenes.  For instance, the part in the elevator when Makenna asks Caden to choose which snack he wants, “Granola bar or trail mix, granola bar or trail mix” was done in a sing-song voice that I thought was cute and made me giggle. This story is only a little over 3 hours long and, while I’ve re-read this novella many, many times over the years, it was refreshing to listen to the audiobook.
