Here are some ghostly reads that you may not have heard about yet.

The Haunted Love anthology by Joya Fields offers the perfect combination of ghostly paranormal romance with a healthy splash of mystery and suspense. This anthology is composed of all three stories from her Haunting at Inner Harbor series (Hereafter, Altered Frequency, and Sidelined Afterlife). The ghosts in these stories are on the sweet side and all are charmingly tied to their individual plots.

Here's my review originally posted in February 2014 with my favorite teasers newly inserted:

Hereafter
4 Stars...So Fascinating!

I was completely fascinated by the world created in Hereafter. The summary already says a lot, so I won't delve too much into the plot of this short story. It starts off with a simple man trying to live a simple life, or should I say trying to get on with his life after a bad break-up. Moving into this particular apartment totally changes everything he believes in when he encounters a beautiful ghost. Suddenly, he becomes entangled in solving a mystery that ultimately spins his life in a different direction.

Now, with Rob being a tax accountant, you might think he's a boring person, but he's not. As his story unfolds and his tragic past comes to play, I truly felt the pain he held inside coming off the pages. What kept me reading was the mystery surrounding Angie. She's a ghost caught between two worlds, and her sadness and need for someone to just believe tugged at my heart.

With a story combining endearing romance, mystery, life lessons, and the sexiest way to time-travel, I found Hereafter to be a truly enjoyable read. It will make you believe that anything is possible.

Hereafter teaser:
"A gush of cold air whipped past her face. Something reached for her. Something cold and sinister."

Altered Frequency
4 Stars...Short, sweet and sexy! Will make you believe!

He has trust issues. She has very good reasons for steering clear of him. Despite their undeniable physical attraction when they first meet, Missy Prescott and Blake Decker resist opening their hearts to one another. Not if Betty has any say in the matter. What's the harm of a little nudging from a sweet and friendly ghost anyway?

What an enjoyable addition to the Hauntings at Inner Harbor series! Altered Frequency has less angst than Hereafter, but what it does have is more romance (both heartwarming and steamy kind), charm and a healthy dose of nail-biting suspense! As with her other stories, Joya Fields, makes you care so much for her characters and what happens to them. You just can't help but feel for Missy and Blake and what each have gone through in their lives. You will just adore Betty to pieces! I also loved the Baltimore setting and the details of both their jobs. Blake is a cop and Missy is a late night DJ. All these elements combine to create quite an engaging story!

Can Altered Frequency be read as a standalone? Absolutely! I definitely place this story in the short-sweet-sexy category.

Altered Frequency teaser:
"Something crashed inside Missy's apartment and Blake put his ear against the door. What was going on in there?"

Sidelined Afterlife
4 Stars...Mysterious & Charming!

Sidelined Afterlife is the third book in the Hauntings at Inner Harbor series and my favorite of the three! The setting returns to the haunted apartment building in Baltimore, Maryland. In the previous book, Altered Frequency, we were given a glimpse into the life of one of the residents, Veronica Matthews. I remember finding her character quite interesting. She seemed troubled in a way, and after reading this installment, now I know why. Veronica is a photographer, but she's also a psychic-medium. She's really not a fan of her ability to see and talk to ghosts only because this "gift" has mainly brought her so much emotional pain. When she meets her neighbor Hunter Anderson, Veronica struggles with helping the handsome ER doctor. She hopes to finally use her ability for something positive for a change.

What a fun mystery/romance! On one hand there is this vibrant spirit who just wants to cross over into the next world but can't do so without help. On the other hand there is the budding romance between two neighbors. The two sides of this story are beautifully tied together! Veronica and Hunter spend a lot of time together trying to solve a mystery that has them delving into the the former life of the young ghost who has been haunting Hunter. Hunter falls hard for the sassy redhead, but he's got his work cut out for him with all the walls she puts up. For Veronica, trusting someone with her heart doesn't come easy. It's good that Mr. "Sexy Eyes" is a pretty determined guy!

Ms. Fields sure did keep me on my toes and guessing where everything would lead to! The theme of being able to resolve heartache in order to move on is widely used. There were funny parts, sexy parts, and then some scenes just gave me lovely, ghostly chills! Each story in this series is unique and each can be read as a standalone. Sidelined Afterlife was both charming and engaging enough that I didn't want it to end. I'm actually going to miss these characters! I have truly enjoyed reading this series and getting to know the people in this haunted apartment building.

Sidelined Afterlife teaser:
"The gift brought too many complications and this ghost apparently came with a demanding man begging to know more about the entity."

If you're in the mood for something witchy with a Salem, MA setting, then Cursed Be the Wicked by J.R. Richardson will not disappoint. This mystery suspense PNR is perfect to read this time of year!

Here's my review originally posted in January 2014:

4.5 – 5.0 Stars

You know that feeling you get when you're so into a story that you don't want it all to end? That happened to me while reading Cursed be the Wicked. I got to the last chapter, which is essentially an epilogue, and I hesitated for a moment before delving into the final pages.

Coop is reluctant to be back in Salem. The place dredges up so many bad memories that he's spent so much time trying to forget. He has one goal...do his research for the article he's been assigned to write and then hightail it out of town. Once he's there he meets Finn, who takes it upon herself to be his personal guide. Along the way it becomes inevitable that past and present must collide. This leads to Coop seeking the answers he never knew he wanted, but is he really ready to learn the whole truth and finally believe?

Oh my! Ms. Richardson has written quite a debut novel! It's got a little paranormal, a splash of romance, and a whole lot of mystery. The story is entirely in Coop's POV. My only teeny, tiny gripe is that I would have loved a bit of Finn's POV as well, since I found her to be so fascinating. I appreciated her warm personality and sharp intuition, but I also understood that this is mainly Coop's story to tell. Coop and Finn fall into a comfortable and friendly relationship as they searched for answers. I loved that the setting is in Salem, MA, which makes the story feel a little real. With a plot that leads to wicked twists, cryptic messages, and endearing life lessons, Cursed be the Wicked will stay in my heart and mind for a long while.

Favorite Finn quote:
“Apologies are a dime a dozen. I don't need an apology. What I need is sincerity.”

Favorite Coop quote:
“This isn't exactly how I planned our second kiss, but I'm willing to go with it if you are.”

Now that you've reached the bottom, Happy Halloween!

Rendezvous in Point Reyes by Elisabeth Barrett ~ ARC Review

Title: Rendezvous in Point Reyes
Author: Elisabeth Barrett
Series: West Coast Holiday #3
Release Date: October 20, 2015

For shy, quiet Stella Flynn, love is an illusion. After a rough divorce, all she wants is to make a fresh start and get on with her life. Unfortunately, she spends all her waking hours working at her family’s Napa Valley winery alongside her ex, the assistant winemaker. Unable to bear the thought of spending another weekend surrounded by lovey-dovey couples, especially after suffering through a lonely holiday season, she escapes to Point Reyes to wallow. Little does she know that an old family friend has other plans …

Sexy, free-spirited Jason Roberts has secretly been in love with Stella for years. The problem? She’s his best friend’s younger sister, and Stella’s brother would kill him if he ever broke her heart. Besides, Jace is pretty sure that Stella thinks of him like another brother, not a lover. But then he notices the way she’s looking at him, and one perfect kiss changes everything.

Over a long, romantic weekend, Stella and Jace discover that seduction is a game that’s easy to lose … and that the path from friends to lovers is never as smooth as it seems.

Rating: 4.5 Stars ~ LOVED

Cheese + Wine make a wonderful pairing!

Rendezvous in Point Reyes is the third West Coast Holiday novella and one of my favorites in the series. Elisabeth Barrett creates a wonderful, romantic weekend getaway type of read with a friends-to-lovers theme.

Stella Flynn is the sister of Liam (from NewYear’s in Napa) and helps run the family winery in Napa Valley. It has also been a few months after her divorce, and she just needs to get away for a few days, especially since it’s Valentine’s weekend. She ends up in Point Reyes Station, a small coastal town in Northern California, where she runs into her brother’s best friend, Jason Roberts.

Here’s why I adored Rendezvous in Point Reyes:

Stella and Jason make a great pairing! I love the friends-to-lovers theme, and I think it worked well in this novella. Jason has held back his feelings for Stella for so long, and now that she’s divorced, well, game on! He knows he has to tread carefully as things could get awkward quick, you know. I liked Stella, because she’s trying to move on with her life. Her visit to Point Reyes seems to come at a pivotal point in both their lives, and I loved seeing things play out.

I’ve read quite a few stories from Elisabeth Barrett by now, and I’ve come to know that she can write beautiful settings well. I know that I’ll be whisked away when I read something from her, and that is exactly the feeling I got from this novella. I’ve been to this part of the world before, and reading Rendezvous in Point Reyes actually took me back to remember the food, people, and sights. Makes me want to go back there again!

If you’re looking for a quickie read that centers around cheese, wine, friendship, and romance all wrapped up in a lovely setting, then don’t hesitate to give this one a try!

In Rendezvous in Point Reyes, there is mention of Stella at Oxbow Public Market, which is in Napa Valley. I visit Napa quite often, and Oxbow Public Market is one of my favorite stops there for great local food. I happened to be there recently and stopped by for a quick organic snack and coffee break. I couldn't resist taking this picture:

I know people are seeking holiday reads this time of year. Here is my Christmas in Tahoe review originally posted in December 2013:

Sign me up for one of Chase Deckert's snowboarding lessons, please!

I don't know about you, but when the holiday season is in full swing, I tend to be in the mood for some romantic holiday reads! Christmas in Tahoe was everything I wanted, and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I truly enjoyed this novella.

Ann Smith is still mourning the loss of her fiancé, who had passed away around Christmastime a few years back. It's been hard for her to move on, and understandably so, the holiday season tends to not be a merry one. Ann and her friend make plans for a fun getaway in Lake Tahoe during Christmas, but at the last minute her friend can't make the trip and instead sends someone else to accompany Ann.

Oh, y'all need to meet Chase Deckert! He's one hunky snowboarder, and ultra SMART...PhD level smart! I find that combo in a man really HOT! Although bio-tech companies are after his research, there's a huge reason why he left Silicon Valley. He was all set to spend Christmas alone until a friend asked for a favor. Once Chase gets to know Ann, he realizes she's no plain Jane! She totally surprises him that she can handle her skis, and they continue to have a fun time together.

The setting in Tahoe was delightfully written. I felt like I was transported to the top of the snowy mountain with Chase and Ann. It's a perfect place for romance to blossom. Ms. Barrett also injects some local San Francisco Bay Area flair into this story, which made me smile! Chase and Ann are two broken souls. I love it when people get a second chance at happiness! Christmas in Tahoe is sexy, smart, and filled with the perfect amount of holiday spirit! Roxy, the black lab is adorable, too!

Author:  Jennifer Lane
Genre:  New Adult Sports Romance
Cover Design:  Coreen Montagna (coreenm@gmail.com)
Release Date:  December 2, 2015

Blurb

Volleyball wonder Lucia Ramirez found her love match in Blocked despite the glaring political spotlight aimed on her family. In Aced, the second book in Jennifer Lane’s Blocked series, it could be her brother Alejandro’s turn to get lucky in love.

Medical student Alejandro’s hot Latin looks get him plenty of attention, but his deep faith and admiration for his father keep him on a righteous path, with no time for something as frivolous as love. He strives to do the right thing—study diligently, take care of his siblings, represent the family well—so why does he feel so unfulfilled?

Enter Lucia’s friend and teammate Maddie Brooks, who shines at blocking the ball and acing the serve. Too bad this graduating senior isn’t so confident about her life off the court. Her longtime boyfriend has just bailed on her, and med school applications loom large. Oh, and a nerve-wracking tryout for Team USA also approaches.

Maddie meets Alejandro when he visits Lucia at school, and she’s soon drawn to his sharp mind. Alejandro is similarly intrigued by Maddie’s talent and strength. But will personal biases and family politics smother the slow burn of their attraction? Unless Maddie can learn to believe in herself, and Alejandro can become his own man, their kindling romance hardly stands a chance.

Will either of them be bold enough to try something new? Find out in this emotion-rich story that refuses to shy away from life’s hardest questions. Because love is worth the risk.

Book one BLOCKED on SALE for a limited time!

Aced

I’d only seen Alejandro on TV, but his presence seemed magnified in real life. He was Jaylon’s height but probably weighed thirty pounds less. He moved like a panther, sleek and long in a black suit “dressed down” with no tie. His short black hair shone in the arena lights, and he appeared freshly shaven. Hot damn! He sure looked more suave than any college boy I’d encountered. Was that the typical dress for medical school at Johns Hopkins? Probably not. Something told me Alex did things his own way.

As Alejandro approached, Lucia stood to hug him, shaking her head. “Hey, what’re you doing here? You didn’t tell me you were coming.”

He smiled. “Could we go somewhere to talk?”

She glanced at me. “I don’t want to leave Maddie. I dragged her here, so it’d be rude to abandon her.”

“So this is the famous Maddie.” When Alejandro reached across to shake my hand, his dark eyes burned into me. “I’ve seen you play, but it’s good to finally meet. I’ve heard great things about you.” His handshake was firm, but his hand was soft and warm, zinging a surprising thrill right through me. I realized that for at least a few moments, I hadn’t thought about Jaylon. Alejandro let go all too quickly.

His expression sobered as he looked back at Lucia. “I want to talk to you about something in private.”

She folded her arms across her chest as they both sat. “I already said no, thank you. I can’t right now.”

He frowned and squared his shoulders. Then he leaned in to Lucia’s ear and spoke to her in Spanish. She bristled next to me.

“How dare you?” she hissed.

I leaned back. What had just changed my sweet Rez into a pissy hellcat?

Title: Need You for Always
Author: Marina Adair
Series: Heroes of St. Helena #2
Release Date: October 13, 2015
Publisher: Montlake Romance

Emerson “Emi” Blake dropped out of culinary school to care for her ailing mother, but she has bigger dreams than running St. Helena’s most popular pita cart. First on the menu: upgrade to a gourmet food truck. A new part-time job as a personal chef will definitely provide the funds, but it also forces her into close contact with her one and only one-night stand, Dax Baudouin, who’s daring her to try a second taste.

Former army Ranger Dax has a clear mission: come home, get healed, and get gone. Yet Emi’s tough-girl exterior and hidden soft side are even harder to resist than her mouthwatering baklava. After years of battles, he knows better than to try and rescue anyone—not that she’ll let him get close enough to try. Truth is, Dax is starting to think that Emi’s the one person who can save him…if he can just persuade her to give him another shot.

The Baudouin brothers are addicting too!

I’ve been a fan of Marina Adair’s St. Helena series from the beginning. I adored the St. Helena Vineyard series, which focused on the lives of the DeLuca family. The more recent Heroes of St. Helena series are all about the yummy Baudouin brothers, and they’re addicting to read about, too…especially Dax Baudouin!

Dax and Emerson had a steamy one-night only fling 5 months ago before continuing on to their separate lives. Now Dax is back in St. Helena temporarily to recover from injuries, and he’s crossing paths with Emerson like no one’s business. Emi just wants to focus on her goal on getting her food truck, but having Dax back in town is one huge distraction.

These two were a really fun pairing! Emerson had to put her dreams on hold to come back to St. Helena to take care of her family. She’s been the selfless nurturer while working hard towards making her dreams come true. There were scenes that brought some serious tears to my eyes, because Emerson misses the connection with her mom so much. Her heart is very tender and guarded at the moment. She knows that Dax is home a short time only, so why even bother to open her heart? There’s a reason Dax’s stay in St. Helena is temporary, and he struggles with his issues all throughout the story. He’s certainly irresistible, and if you like the tortured ex-military man, then Dax is your type of hero. I thought the funny parts were well done. All I’ll say is that they were the “Loveliest” and made for delightful situations for Dax and Emi to be together.

It always feels good to read one of Adair’s St. Helena books. She does small town romances so well. Need You for Always had a great balance of humor, steamy romance and deep emotion. Since Emi is a chef, this book also made me hungry for Greek food. I’ve never craved for a baklava so much in my life! Up next in this series is Adam Baudouin, and his pairing with another St. Helena resident should be very delicious!

My Book Snack's Sunday Post (#10)

The Sunday Post meme is created by Kim the Caffeinated Book Reviewer. Bought Borrowed & Bagged is hosted by TalkSupe. It's a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead.

The Sunday Post

It's been a long time since I've done a Sunday Post.
Last week I finally finished watching Downton Abbey season 5. I thought season 4 wasn't very interesting, and I was still upset at what happened at the end of season 3. I basically skipped season 5 while it aired here in the US. Over the summer I asked friends who were fans of the show if Downton Abbey was still worth watching, and they all responded with a resounding YES! I slowly began working my way through season 5 and actually enjoyed watching the show again. I love the banter between Violet and Isobel the most! They crack me up with their discussions! I'm now ready for season 6, the final season of the series. Anyway, this probably doesn't make sense to those who don't watch the show.
Have you ever started watching a show again after you gave it up?

Yesterday we went apple picking, so it looks like I'll be baking a pie soon. YUM!

I will recap the past few weeks.

Adored to pieces! I want a dog like Oreo!

When a story pulls you in right at the beginning and is engaging all throughout, you know it’s an awesome read. That is what happened for me with All I Want. All I Want is the very first book I’ve had the pleasure of reading from Jill Shalvis’ Animal Magnetism series, and I whole-heartedly adored it to pieces!

Right away the characters drew me in with the fun chemistry they shared. Zoe works as a pilot in Idaho. She’s a caring big sister to her two siblings, very sassy, yet she hasn’t been lucky in the love department. So when she takes her sister’s advice to be a little more spontaneous, it lands her in a certain guy’s path. Parker is such a dreamy hero! His job is to protect endangered species and wildlife. He basically tries to catch the bad guys who do bad things to animals. Parker has a huge heart for the important people in his life. Who knew spending a short time in Idaho would shake up his world big time. If you need any more convincing picture a sexy guy cuddling kittens and that would be Parker. Mmmhmm!

I’m so glad I jumped right into the Animal Magnetism series as quite a few people recommended this series to me. All I Want was such a delightful and quick read. I enjoyed all the animal love and now want a dog just like Oreo!

Hollie Porter Builds a Raft by Eliza Gordon ~ ARC Review

Title: Hollie Porter Builds a Raft
Author: Eliza Gordon
Series: Must Love Otters #2
Release Date: October 1, 2015

raft (noun): when two or more otters rest together,
often holding hands, so they don’t drift apart

Hollie Porter has put her old gig as a 911 operator and sad single girl in an attic-bound box, right where it belongs. She’s rebounded nicely from her run-in with Chloe the Cougar in the wilds of British Columbia, and this new life alongside concierge-in-shining-armor Ryan Fielding? Way more fun. After relocating to Ryan’s posh resort at Revelation Cove, Hollie embarks on an all-new adventure as the Cove’s wildlife experience educator, teaching guests and their kids about otters and orca and cougars, oh my.

When darling Ryan gets down on one NHL-damaged knee and pops the question of a lifetime, Hollie realizes this is where the real adventure begins. It’s all cake tasting, flower choosing, and dress fittings until a long-lost family member shows up at the Cove and threatens to hijack her shiny new life, forcing Hollie to redefine what family means to her. What is she willing to sacrifice to have one of her very own?

As Ryan’s words echo in her head—“Our raft, our rules”—Hollie has to face facts: a raft isn’t always tied together with blood and genetics. Sometimes it’s secured by love and loyalty… and occasional help from the clever creatures that call Revelation Cove home.

A MUST READ for Must Love Otters fans!

If you adored Must Love Otters, you need to see what happens in the sequel. Hollie Porter Builds a Raft had more of everything I loved in Must Love Otters. Hollie gets into more quirky situations. Hollie and Ryan are blissfully in love in Revelation Cove, and they’re ready to take the next step in their lives as a couple. Things hardly go perfect for Hollie…ever! In addition to a series of mishaps that only Hollie Porter can get into, unexpected visits from certain people happen. Now she must deal with a boatload of issues on her journey to happiness forever after with Concierge Ryan.

I read Must Love Otters almost two years ago, and I was fine with the ending. I didn’t think I would need to revisit the characters until I started reading Hollie Porter Builds a Raft. Hollie’s happiness is threatened in more ways than one in one unfortunate situation after another. Don’t mind freakin’ Mangala the demon goat when there are cute otters! I guarantee the otter parts will absolutely warm your heart. Ryan is as swoon-worthy as expected, and he sweeps Hollie off her feet in the sweetest romance ever! She’s so lucky, and he really does get her weirdly, wonderful, and silly ways! They are truly each other’s rock. In this book, Hollie continues to remain close to her dad, and there are tear-inducing, touching father-daughter scenes where he is concerned.

If you’re in the mood for a romantic comedy that gives nod to nature and animals, Hollie Porter Builds a Raft will give you a balance of both the crazy and lovely feelings in one great read. It felt good to be back in Hollie and Ryan’s world again. The entire book felt like reconnecting with old friends. This is a delightful and worthy sequel. I can’t wait for more!

~*~ Review Repost ~*~
Here is my review of Must Love Otters, originally written and posted in November 2013.

Sweet & Freakin' Hilarious!

Hollie Porter is stuck with a life that she really doesn't want. Her job, her co-workers, her boyfriend feel all wrong. Her father gifts her a vacation, and she uses this opportunity to get away from it all. Little did she know that making a call to the Revelation Cove resort to make arrangements for her stay there would ultimately change her life on many levels.

I loved Hollie from the start. She's quirky and authentic. She has her own brand of humor, a wild imagination and has far too many misadventures, including one naked mishap...oops! I've got to give her credit for trying to take charge of her life with gusto! When romance finally comes a knocking, oh boy, does it...in the form of a handsome, green-eyed, ex-hockey star! Concierge Ryan is so charming and smooth. He will make you swoon, I promise!

I adored...completely ADORED this book! I laughed, I cried, I rooted for the heroine to find her HEA right from the beginning. One of the things that I enjoyed was Hollie's close relationship with her father, who had raised Hollie as a single dad. Eliza Gordon also did a beautiful job with the setting, painting a stunning visual in my mind, so much so, that I now want to visit British Columbia. I love otters. I really do! I've been to Monterey so many times to view them frolicking in the water. The otters in this book? It's totally worth getting to this part of the story. So cute!

If you love animals and romantic comedies, then I highly recommend MUST LOVE OTTERS! Get ready to giggle-snort several times! This story is incredibly funny, entertaining, and heartwarming. When I reached the end, I wanted to hug the hell out of my e-reader.
