Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him & forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded & completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—& even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—& a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

This is my honest review
Rating: 5 Stars ~ EXCELLENT
Awesome on audio! Mark Watney rules as a space pirate!
The Martian is one book that I’ve been hearing about all year from book friends, and I immediately knew it was something I wanted to read even though I don’t read much science fiction. I knew this was exactly the type of read my husband likes, so we ended up reading The Martian at the same time. He read the book, while I listened to the audiobook. It was a fantastic read for both of us!
Right at the beginning The Martian gets pretty intense as a wicked event happens that results in astronaut Mark Watney stranded on Mars. With no way to contact anyone and very limited food and supplies, what’s a guy to do? Fight to survive…for as long as possible. It also helps to have a sense of humor, which Mark has plenty of in the midst of a very serious situation.
Andy Weir writes a brilliant story in The Martian with a survival-themed plot that has a very realistic feel overall. While reading you’ll feel the level of desperation and danger immensely rise that it will keep you wondering what will happen to Mark Watney.
Bottom line…if you like thrilling reads that keep you on edge, keep you guessing, and filled with both intelligent and funny banter, read The Martian even if it’s out of your usual element.
Listening to the audiobook of The Martian was an absolutely great choice for me. As a first time listener to one of R.C. Bray’s narrations, I found him to be wildly entertaining. Mark Watney’s humor and sarcasm was perfectly portrayed in the audiobook. He made all the scientific explanations and discussions engaging for me. I wouldn’t hesitate to listen to more of R.C. Bray’s narrations in the future. The Martian has become one of my favorite listens!

The Martian movie releases in the US on October 2, 2015.
I, for one, think that Matt Damon (one of my faves) is an excellent choice to play Mark Watney. I saw Matt Damon play an astronaut in the movie Interstellar as a minor character. I have no doubt he can pull off being the main hero in The Martian. Plus, the rest of the cast seem fitting...Jessica Chastain (who was also in Interstellar), Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels to name a few. It all seems like a wonderful combination, especially with Ridley Scott directing. I sure do hope so!
