Hard to Let Go on Goodreads

Taking a deep breath, Beckett knocked on the door.
No answer.
He turned the knob, and the door opened.
“Go away,” came a strained voice.
Beckett poked his head through the opening. Kat sat in a ball in the corner, her legs pulled up to her chest, her arms hugging herself tight.
“Aw, Jesus, Beckett. Really?” Her face was splotchy and her eyes watery, though he didn’t see any tears.
Ten-to-one she was going through some adrenaline letdown right now, too. Which no doubt made it all worse. That shit could fuck you up even when you were used to how it left you feeling drained and shaky, by how all the stress you’d suppressed during the height of the crisis boomeranged twice over after the fact.
He came into the room, closed the door, and turned the lock for good measure. And then he crossed to Kat, scooped his arms under her knees and behind her back and lifted her up against him.
She smacked his chest. “Put me down.”
“No.” He moved to the edge of the bed.
“I don’t need this right now, Beckett. Put me down.”
“Yes, you do,” he said, sitting on the edge of the mattress. He pulled her face in against his throat and smoothed her hair back from her cheek. She trembled against him, just the littlest bit, her skin hot to the touch. He pressed a kiss to her forehead and hugged her tighter. “You did good, kid.”
Every one of her muscles went tight. Her hand fisted in his shirt. And her breath caught as she buried her face against his neck and shoulder.
Then Kat burst out crying.
And it was like being torn apart and put back together, all at once. He hated her pain, but he adored that she wasn’t hiding herself from him, and that she was letting him be there for her.
He didn’t shush her, or try to talk her down, or encourage her to dry her eyes. To be sure, her tears were like daggers in his heart—they hurt like fucking hell. But the only way she was going to feel better was to let this shit out. Ironic realization for him—he did actually see that. But just because you could see what was good for others didn’t mean you had the first goddamned idea how to apply those principles in your own life. And that was a problem for another time anyway.
What mattered right now was Kat. What mattered … was Kat.

About HARD TO LET GO:
Beckett Murda hates to dwell on the past. But his investigation into the ambush that killed half his Special Forces team and ended his Army career gives him little choice. Just when his team learns how powerful their enemies are, hard-ass Beckett encounters his biggest complication yet—a seductive, feisty Katherine Rixey.
A tough, stubborn prosecutor, Kat visits her brothers’ Hard Ink Tattoo shop following a bad break-up—and finds herself staring down the barrel of a stranger’s gun. Beckett is hard-bodied and sexy as hell, but he’s also the most infuriating man ever. Worse, Kat’s brothers are at war with the criminals her office is investigating. When Kat joins the fight, she lands straight in Beckett’s sights . . . and in his arms. Not to mention their enemies’ crosshairs.
Now Beckett and Kat must set aside their differences to work together, because the only thing sweeter than justice is finding love and never letting go.

Rating: 4 Stars ~ LOVED

I’m back for more Stardust, Texas, and I have to say that I’ve enjoyed being back in this small town. After reading the first book, Back in the Game, I couldn’t wait to see what was in store for the eldest Carlyle sister, Jodi!

Right at the beginning, Jodi Carlyle surprised me with her plan to crash a wedding. She has specific reasons for taking on this stunt, but I love how her inner vixen shines through it all. The newest Gunslinger baseball player, Jake Coronado, happens to be at this wedding, and let’s just say he definitely notices one particular redhead, so much so, that things get pretty wild real quick!

One of the things that made me giggle in this book is that each chapter is titled with one of Jodi’s wedding crasher rules. Titles like Look the part, What happens at the wedding stays at the wedding, and my favorite…Do not have sex in the coat closet.

The heart of this story centers around two good people getting their second chance at love. Jake is ready to find love again, and he seems to know exactly what Jodi needs as she works through her issues. I adored these two together, and I loved seeing the Carlyle family and townspeople interact with each other again. That slightly magical and mysterious hope chest has been passed around again, so I’m looking forward to see what adventure awaits the next Carlyle sister. If you’re looking for something sweet, steamy and small town that’s also funny and touching, then plant yourself right in the Stardust, Texas series!

When Beckett finally withdrew from her, Kat missed him everywhere. His heat. His hold. His body inside hers. But he gently turned her, then grabbed some napkins from the supplies. Kat cleaned herself up and they quietly reassembled themselves. All the while, she hoped like hell that things wouldn’t go from awesome to weird as they had before.
Expression serious, Beckett took her hands in his.
And Kat’s heart fell to the floor. Here it comes again. She could already hear him saying that this was a mistake—
“I don’t want to hide us anymore,” he said.
Wait. What? “You … what?” His words were so unexpected, she half felt like she’d just walked, cartoonlike, into a pole she hadn’t known was there.
“I don’t know what we might be, Kat, but I know what I want us not to be. I don’t want us to be some dirty little secret. And I don’t want us to pretend around everyone else that we don’t care. And I don’t want us to just be quickies in a sniper’s roost.” Those bright blue eyes absolutely blazed at her.
Kat’s head spun. Not because she didn’t like the sound of what he was saying, but because she was gobsmacked that he was the one saying it. Mostly, she’d contented herself with thinking quickies in a sniper’s roost were all they’d ever be, no matter how much her heart found deeper, sweeter things to like about the man.
“I won’t say anything if you don’t want me to, though,” he said, brow furrowing and shoulders sagging. Just the littlest bit.
But it was enough to make her realize she hadn’t responded adequately, or, like, at all. “No, no. I’m sorry. I’m just surprised. But I’d like not hiding, too. At first, well, I wasn’t sure …” She shrugged. “But there’s clearly something here, Beckett. And I’d like to know what it might be without feeling like we’re doing something wrong.”
“Exactly,” he said, hope filling his eyes. And God if that didn’t make them even prettier.
She smiled as butterflies whipped through her belly. Kinda ridiculous, given that she was a twenty-nine-year-old woman, but the feeling was there all the same. “So, uh, what were you thinking? And, oh, by the way, I’m pretty sure Jeremy might’ve guessed something’s going on already.”
“Yeah, I caught that. Marz, too, by the way.”
            “Damn, they’re good.” Kat chuckled.
            “Or just giant busybodies.”
Grinning, Kat nodded. “They could be that, too.”
Beckett cupped his big hand around Kat’s face. “The first thing I’d like to do is talk to your brother.” Kat couldn’t hold back the groan that spilled out of her, and it made Beckett chuckle. “Trust me, I’m not looking forward to that conversation either. But Nick’s one of my best friends and my teammate. If he doesn’t hear it from me, he’s gonna be pissed. Or more pissed, as the case may be.”

This is my honest review
Rating: 5 Stars ~ Excellent

Romance, bromance and finally the truth!

When I first started reading Hard to Let Go, it was a little bittersweet for me. I have enjoyed this series from the very beginning. After three books and two novellas, the Hard Ink characters have consistently wormed their way into my heart. I had confidence that Laura Kaye would make the fourth and final full-length book special, and she truly pulled that off in an amazing way! Wow!

Katherine Rixey, younger sister of Nick and Jeremy Rixey, arrived at Hard Ink a few days from the start of this book. She pretty much enters the scene right in the middle of the team’s mission to clear their names and restore their honor and quickly gets caught in the whirlwind of crossfire. I loved Kat! She’s confident, sharp, witty, and a risk taker. These are all qualities that Beckett Murda immediately notices and, boy, do things ignite deliciously between these two right away! Beckett’s backstory is heartbreaking and made me feel for the big guy. There’s a reason why he doesn’t chase dreams, but there’s something very positive about being back together with his closest friends.

“For the first time in a long time he’d dared to want. A woman. His friends. A place to belong.”

Hard to Let Go is not only Beckett and Kat’s story, but it’s also the story that Hard Ink fans have been waiting for from the start. You know that saying “the truth will set you free”? Well, that all happens in spectacular fashion in this book! Just have tissues on hand and your heart ready to be squeezed warmly.

I think Hard to Let Go is the book with the most action, suspense and surprising twists in the series. I was pretty much kept on edge as everything unfolded. The entire series takes place in roughly about a month. The plot is fast moving and reading the books in order is like riding a roller coaster. Laura Kaye writes the journey so special for each of the couples. She seamlessly shows their human, vulnerable side that you feel for each and every one of them, the concern tremendous as so much was at stake. There are several moments in this series, and in this book in particular, that will make you cry, laugh-out-loud, and make your heart pound. These men make up a close-knit team. They are brothers in arms and have each other’s back. They truly fall hard when it comes to love. I’m really sad that this series has now come to an end, but I’m looking forward to what Ms. Kaye has in store for us with the Raven Riders! Thank you, Laura, for introducing us to the heroes of Hard Ink!

My Book Snack #FavoriteHeroines2015 #Giveaway Hop

June 17th-24th we're sharing our favorite kickass heroines! Come meet these awesome ladies and find out why they're the best of the best. Be sure to stop by each blog. There's a giveaway at every stop!

As much as I love the hero in a story, I find that I need to be drawn to the heroine as well. Here are my some of my favorite heroines in no particular order.

Eve Hartt
from
The Poughkeepsie Brotherhood series
by

When I was first introduced to Eve Hartt in book 1, Poughkeepsie, I immediately knew she would become my favorite heroine in the series.  Her journey begins with seeking vengeance, but along the way she will fall hard for the one person that took everything away. I describe her as a self-taught weapon of mass destruction. She's hard as steel on the outside, capable of defending herself and others, and shields her inner demons well. When she's with her man, she likes it bloody and painful. I also love that she whips knives out of her hair when necessary...a useful skill that she needs to teach me. Her journey spans the entire series. My favorite book that she's in is Saving Poughkeepsie simply because the impossible was made possible, and it was beautiful to read how it happens.

Harper Johnson
from
Game Changer
by

I knew from book one that Harper Johnson's story would be good. After reading Game Changer, I found Harper to be an amazing and special heroine who defies all odds. She will make you want to conquer your fears and grab life by the horns! Harper is a true friend who knows what she wants and treads the water carefully when it comes to love.

Charley Davidson
from
The Charley Davidson series
by

Charley Davidson is grim reaper extraordinaire! How is it possible for me to fall more and more in love with a heroine with each and every book? I love that she, not only talks to dead people, but also helps them cross over. That job is pretty important. She has the BEST friend ever! Her love life gets more steamy throughout the series. I'm really jealous that her man is Reyes Alexander Farrow!

I can go on and on with my list, but these are the ones that currently stand out to me. There are so many heroines worth mentioning out there. Which ones make your list?

Lia Riley
Bridgewater #1
Avon Romance

New to Avon author Lia Riley makes a splash with her first sexy, hilarious book in the sizzling Brightwater series!

A kiss is just the beginning…

Pinterest Perfect. Or so Annie Carson’s life appears on her popular blog. Reality is... messier. Especially when it lands her back in one-cow town, Brightwater, California, and back in the path of the gorgeous six-foot-four reason she left. Sawyer Kane may fill out those wranglers, but she won’t be distracted from her task. Annie just needs the summer to spruce up and sell her family’s farm so she and her young son can start a new life in the big city. Simple, easy, perfect.

Sawyer has always regretted letting the first girl he loved slip away. He won’t make the same mistake twice, but can he convince beautiful, wary Annie to trust her heart again when she’s been given every reason not to? And as a single kiss turns to so much more, can Annie give up her idea of perfect for a forever that’s blissfully real.

Lia Riley writes offbeat New Adult and Contemporary Adult romance. After studying at the University of Montana-Missoula, she scoured the world armed only with a backpack, overconfidence and a terrible sense of direction. She counts shooting vodka with a Ukranian mechanic in Antarctica, sipping yerba mate with gauchos in Chile and swilling XXXX with stationhands in Outback Australia among her accomplishments.
A British literature fanatic at heart, Lia considers Mr. Darcy and Edward Rochester as her fictional boyfriends. Her very patient husband doesn't mind. Much. When not torturing heroes (because c'mon, who doesn't love a good tortured hero?), Lia herds unruly chickens, camps, beach combs, daydreams about future books, wades through a mile-high TBR pile and schemes yet another trip. Right now, Icelandic hot springs and Scottish castles sound mighty fine.

My Book Snack's Sunday Post (#9) ~ Bay Area Book Festival Highlights

The Sunday Post meme is created by Kim the Caffeinated Book ReviewerIt's a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead.

The Sunday Post

Last weekend I went to the Bay Area Book Festival in Berkeley, California. I had the chance to meet up with book blogger, Kathy, from My Nook, Books and More. On day 1 we had a blast getting to know YA authors such as:

Amy Spalding (Kissing Ted Callahan)
Suzanne Young (The Program Series)
Valerie Tejeda (Hollywood Witch Hunter)
Jenny Han (To All the Boys I've Loved Before)
Lauren Oliver (Vanishing Girls)

On Day 2, I had the chance to see...

Kim Culbertson (Catch a Falling Star)
Morgan Matson (Since You've Been Gone)
Virginia Boeker (The Witch Hunter)

Before heading to the Flaunt that Romance--Don't Hide It! romance panel consisting of local Avon Romance authors Julie Anne Long, T.J. Kline, and Jennifer Ryan. Aren't they adorable here?

I met Jennifer Ryan last year at Avon KissCon San Rafael. At the time I had not read any of her books, and it's always hard to think of something to say when you haven't read an author's work before. This time I had read both At Wolf Ranch & When It's Right and was able to chat with Jennifer a bit about my love for her Montana Men series! In fact, since no one was behind me at the signing table at the time I was there, I was able to talk to these lovely ladies quite a bit, which absolutely made my day!

Overall, I'm glad I went to this book festival. It was a delight meeting Kathy, seeing all these wonderful authors, and seeing so much love for books of all genres. It was the first time this event was held in the Bay Area, and I hope it happens again soon!

When I went to see Jurassic World on Friday, this movie trailer was shown:
Max movie trailer
(from YouTube)

It's about a military dog, and the movie looks good! I might need to bring tissues when I see it. Releases June 26, 2015 in the US.

I will recap the past two weeks.
