YOU'VE GOT MAIL meets HOW TO EAT A CUPCAKE in this delightful novel about a talented chef and the food critic who brings down her restaurant—whose chance meeting turns into a delectable romance of mistaken identities.

In downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Lou works tirelessly to build her beloved yet struggling French restaurant, Luella’s, into a success. She cheerfully balances her demanding business and even more demanding fiancĂ©…until the morning she discovers him in the buff—with an intern.

Witty yet gruff British transplant Al is keeping himself employed and entertained by writing scathing reviews of local restaurants in the Milwaukee newspaper under a pseudonym. When an anonymous tip sends him to Luella’s, little does he know he’s arrived on the worst day of the chef’s life. The review practically writes itself: underdone fish, scorched sauce, distracted service—he unleashes his worst.

The day that Al’s mean-spirited review of Luella’s runs, the two cross paths in a pub: Lou drowning her sorrows, and Al celebrating his latest publication. As they chat, Al playfully challenges Lou to show him the best of Milwaukee and she’s game—but only if they never discuss work, which Al readily agrees to. As they explore the city’s local delicacies and their mutual attraction, Lou’s restaurant faces closure, while Al’s column gains popularity. It’s only a matter of time before the two fall in love…but when the truth comes out, can Lou overlook the past to chase her future?

Set in the lovely, quirky heart of Wisconsin, THE COINCIDENCE OF COCONUT CAKE is a charming love story of misunderstandings, mistaken identity, and the power of food to bring two people together.

This is my honest review
Rating: 5 Stars ~ EXCELLENT

I’m absolutely SMITTEN with this delectable story! It’s like comfort food!

I’m not going to lie! That cake on the cover initially caught my attention, and after reading the summary I knew I had to read The Coincidence of Coconut Cake. What a delectable read this turned out to be!

“We both love food, and laughing, and trying new things.”

Lou and Al are true foodies and make a perfect match in food heaven. So, what’s the problem? Well, the day they actually meet, Al and Lou don’t realize that their paths had crossed a few days before while they were both doing their jobs. Al, a restaurant critic, doesn’t know that Lou is the chef and owner of, Luella’s, the French restaurant he gave a horrible review to recently. Lou doesn’t know anything about what Al does for a living, since they agree not to talk about work as she shows him the best food experiences in town.

“He obliterates every restaurant he reviews. But he does it in the most entertaining way.”

Poor Lou! I felt so bad for her on what seemed to be her worst day ever! Have you ever had one of those days where nothing goes right at all? I adored Lou and her hardworking personality. Al is British and new in town. He’s very arrogant and has quite distinguishable taste in food. I must say that, as he and Lou spend time together, the guy really grew on me.

The Coincidence of Coconut Cake is like comfort food. It will warm your soul by the time you reach the end. This story is also crave-inducing as it’s a culinary tour of the best food in Milwaukee, according to Lou. The plot is witty and definitely adds to the tension. It makes you want to root for something good in what seems like an impossible situation. The secondary characters are also a delight to get to know. There is this older couple that will win your heart. If you get wrapped up into this story like I did, then you’ll tear up at a certain point. That coconut cake! It seems that cake is its own little star. I’m so glad the recipe is included, because I was craving it while reading this book!

This story is all about friendship, persevering through hardship, pursuing your dreams, opening your mind to something new, and to keep enjoying what you do best in life. The Coincidence of Coconut Cake has become one of my favorite reads. Thank you, Amy E. Reichert, for writing such a delicious and charming story!
